What makes us different?

Not All String Groups are Created Equal!

Whether you are choosing a new car or even a new outfit, it is fairly obvious that some options are more impressive, more desirable and more reliable than others.
It is no different when choosing live music for your event.
An important event is a "once-off" chance to create a perfect atmosphere, and the quality of the music can make or break that effect.
Please don’t find out the hard way how poorly it is possible for a low quality group to affect your big day!

String Ensembles 101: Who Not to Book!!

We caution very strongly against booking a group of students from an educational institution such as the Conservatorium. These groups are usually ‘thrown together’ and they do not treat your event as a priority. They have no reputation to uphold, and their focus is on developing their solo playing if you’re lucky, and partying if you’re not!. They see your event very much as a sideline and they almost always lack the necessary maturity to understand how important your event is to you personally, or to your business’s reputation. They have only a small repertoire, and most of it is poorly rehearsed.

We also recommend against booking a group through most agents, because most agents are dealing with too many clients and too many events at once. They are too far removed from what is actually happening, and the more people intervening between the client and the performer the less likely it is that the client’s wishes will be understood and carried out. When booking players through an agent you are generally paying more for a lesser result.

When researching options on the internet, please take due care! 
A number of groups in Sydney have ‘re-invented reality’ significantly to create quite a promising impression on a web page, but they deliver a totally different, and disconcertingly poor, standard on the day.

A Brief History of OPUS 4 . . . Proven on the Street . . . Refined to the Recital Hall . . .

OPUS 4 began life as a street-performance ensemble, and many may still remember our performances around the Sydney CBD (outside the old Grace Bros store, in the QVB & in the Pitt St Mall) over many years. The exceptional quality of the group and its popularity made it something of an institution, and as a testament to that, members of the group have gone on to perform with some of the best orchestras in Australia including the
Australian Youth Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra,
Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

 While we haven’t been busking for quite a while, we still bring to private and corporate functions
the beautiful, vibrant and exciting quality of performance we were founded on.

Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Haydn, Beethoven etc. through to Gershwin, Louis Armstrong, Disney, The Beatles, U2, Beyonce, ColdPlay and so on.
We play everything from Pachelbel’s ‘Canon’ to Billy Idol’s ‘White Wedding’ and everything in between, so we can tailor our musical selections to your taste, and to the atmosphere you wish to create.

What do we do?

An Adaptable Ensemble Working With You Individually to Achieve the Atmosphere You Desire

OPUS 4 presents a wide repertoire of music from baroque and classical through romantic, with a good selection of jazz and pop as required.
The music we present is always chosen carefully to fit perfectly with the atmosphere you wish to create.

The group is able to produce a high energy performance which can attract attention, but is equally capable of providing the ambient background music required for an intimate dinner gathering, and of course a wide selection of music perfect for wedding ceremonies and receptions.

Everything from a Secluded Wedding in the Gardens or at a Private Home, to a Major Production on the Stage of the Town Hall or in the Grand Ballroom at the Ritz Carlton has been, and can be handled easily and professionally by OPUS 4.

For the vast majority of events we find that performing as a String Trio, String Quartet, or String Quintet works perfectly, but we appreciate that each client has particular desired goals and impressions in mind which may be better accomplished with different sized or more diversely composed ensembles.

We have the capability to provide larger ensembles for extra impact when requested.
Large Ensembles have been provided at major events for such clients as The British Embassy and the Australian Olympic Committee major events.

We can equally easily scale down to a soloist or duo if desired.
This has been done regularly for events with limited budgets or space, and also for intimate gatherings such as especially romantic Wedding Proposals.

OPUS 4 are a very adaptable group and we regularly collaborate with vocal, woodwind or brass soloists particularly for wedding ceremonies; and can also provide a jazz/pop piano trio suited for pre-dinner drinks and dinner music if required.
